On my daily media sweep earlier today, this interesting Competition Bureau contribution to an OECD study on competition and gasoline caught my eye (OECD Policy Roundtables – Competition in Road Fuel (2013)). Given Canadian consumers’ apparent continued consternation with gas prices, this is a fairly interesting and timely read I thought.

My friends over at the Institute of Competition Law have announced their annual Antitrust Writing Awards & Ranking for 2014. This annual and very fine competition, sponsored by the Institute of Competition Law (publisher of Concurrences Journal), will be held on March 25, 2014 and their Antitrust Writing Awards Editorial Committee is presently selecting papers published or accepted for publication in 2013.

Earlier today the American Bar Association published a new issue of its bi-monthly publication Antitrust Source (December 2013). This issue includes several articles, “Monopsony 2013: Still Not Truly Symmetric” and “Group Buying: A Canadian Case Study”, and reviews of the writings and research of FTC Bureau of Economics Director Martin Gaynor and the DoJ’s Antitrust Division’s Deputy A.G. for Economic Analysis Aviv Nevo. Some good thick antitrust and economics reading for the holidays – think I’ll grab an eggnog now! For the new issue of Antitrust Source see: Antitrust Source (December 2013).

Codes of ethics are a common and ubiquitous aspect of many trade and professional associations. A well prepared and thought out association code can achieve a number of legitimate aims, including ensuring that members adhere to the common goals and principles of the association, reducing legal liability and risk and enhancing the brand of members’ product or service offerings.

On September 10th, the Canadian Competition Bureau announced a public consultation for suggestions where it should intervene in regulated markets (i.e., where the Bureau does not have direct enforcement powers given the existence of legislation or regulations sanctioning conduct that would otherwise violate the Competition Act).
