Earlier today, the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association (CCCA) published a new edition of its CCCA Magazine. Included is a quite good article on competition law compliance entitled “Competition law: How to stay out of trouble” (sub-title: “How a robust antitrust compliance program can keep your company out of trouble”).

On my daily media sweep earlier today, this interesting Competition Bureau contribution to an OECD study on competition and gasoline caught my eye (OECD Policy Roundtables – Competition in Road Fuel (2013)). Given Canadian consumers’ apparent continued consternation with gas prices, this is a fairly interesting and timely read I thought.

Yesterday, Canada’s Competition Bureau confirmed yet another new advocacy initiative, confirming that it has decided to study the Ontario beer retailing market for potential reforms to increase competition.

Tis the season for annual reviews and updates. In this spirit, the Global Competition Review (GCR) has published its annual Antitrust Review of the Americas for 2014. This year’s issue includes contributions relating to the ICN, U.S. antitrust enforcement (cartels, CFIUS, IP & antitrust, mergers, private litigation, unilateral conduct and vertical restraints) and Canadian competition law enforcement (cartels, Investment Canada Act, mergers, abuse of dominance and private actions). This year’s issue also includes competition/antitrust law updates for Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Equador, Mexico, Panama and Suriname. The Criminal Matters Committee of the Canadian Bar Association’s Competition Law Section has issued a call for articles for its upcoming 2014 Spring issue of The Marker.

On September 10th, the Canadian Competition Bureau announced a public consultation for suggestions where it should intervene in regulated markets (i.e., where the Bureau does not have direct enforcement powers given the existence of legislation or regulations sanctioning conduct that would otherwise violate the Competition Act).

Yesterday the Competition Bureau announced that a Quebec telemarketer has pleaded guilty to deceptive telemarketing under the Competition Act and fraud under the Criminal Code and was sentenced to nine months imprisonment.

Canada’s national not-for-profit advertising self-regulatory body Advertising Standards Canada (ASC) has released a new report on Canadian consumers’ views on advertising, entitled 2013 Consumer Perspectives on Advertising.
