Earlier today, Canada’s Federal Government announced the details of Canada’s next 2500 MHz spectrum auction (in April 2015) emphasizing its goal of achieving more competition in Canada’s wireless sector (see: Harper Government Announces New Measures to Benefit Canadian Wireless Consumers). The Government also issued a related Backgrounder and links, including homepage for the upcoming auction.
In making the announcement, Canadian Industry Minister James Moore said:
“Today’s announcement means Canadian consumers in urban and rural areas will soon benefit from the deployment of advanced mobile and broadband services across the country, which will lead to better, faster Internet services on the latest technologies. The rules for this auction, like those for the upcoming 700 MHz auction, were designed to support more choice in our wireless market while putting the interests of consumers first.”
Rules for the new spectrum auction will include: spectrum caps “to ensure that four or more providers have the opportunity to access 2500 MHz spectrum” (continuing the Government’s goal for four providers in Canadian markets); smaller geographic licence areas to “provide more opportunity for rural Internet service providers to participate”; and restrictions on spectrum transfer.
